Serene Moon Concert by Jiaoyue Lyu: Guqin Recital at Weill Recital Hall

Posted June 6, 2014 by Ellen Gilmer

Jiaoyue Lyu, an accomplished Guqin artist and pianist, performed a Guqin concert of exquisite beauty, sensitivity and fine art on June 2nd, 2014, at Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall, in New York City. Having studied and played piano since the age of four, she has won numerous awards in competitions throughout China and the world as a pianist. Jiaoyue Lyu performed a program of poetic instrumental selections as well as some pieces with vocal parts. The program included solo pieces along with numbers played by the ensemble, which included the excellent and versatile musicians Zhou Yi, playing pipa, Miao Yimin, playing dizi and other woodwind instruments and Shih-Hua (Judy) Yeh, playing Guqin. Attending a concert of Serene Moon, a beautifully sensitive and mesmerizing virtuoso Guqin performance by Jiaoyue Lyu and her acclaimed ensemble of musicians—all Chinese instrument players of ultimate quality and accomplishment—is a breathtaking and enlightening experience not to be missed.

Premiere Concert of the Ars Longa Quire – A Generous Gift of Celebration in Song

Posted March 17, 2013 by Ellen Gilmer

The premiere concert of the Ars Longa Quire at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Huntington, Long Island, NY, at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, January 13th, 2013, was a beautifully presented and performed program of uniquely combined choral selections. At once in contrast to and complementary of one another, the vocal works included revealed the individual expertise of each singer as well as a subtly refined precision of vocal blending and tonal quality unity. At times, the lilting swell of the glorious choral mix rose to fill the sanctuary, reverberating from the distant architectural heights of the arched English Gothic style ceiling above. Whenever called for by the music, however, the choir members joined to produce a concise, singular note in perfect unison and expertly achieved sotto voce.
