Fairly isolated from the rest of the globalized world, the former French Colony presently known officially as the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, a communist regime ruling since 1975, Laos remains an enigma for many. Famous for being the “Ancient Kingdom of a Million Elephants”, the country offers visitors tranquility, authenticity and fascination with its Buddhist temples, historical sites and warm friendly people.

However, it is recognized by many other countries that this tiny nation with its turbulent history of the last decades is fragile and some indicate that the reality of the well-being of its villagers and farmers is other than what we see as tourists.

Internationally renowned photographer GMB Akash, spent time in this charming tropical but little known nation, photographing the countryside and the people that live and work there. He is now honoring the Laotian people of the countryside in his upcoming photographic exhibition in Vientiane, “Laos – A Rural Perspective” from September 26 – October 26, 2013 organized and supported by IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development).

“The beautiful spirits of the people of Laos enchant me enormously. The exhibition will exhibit in six central Vientiane venues at the same time. I wish to bring more positive changes in the life of the rural people of Laos.” – GMB Akash

Unlike many photojournalists, GMB Akash goes much further than simply informing and provoking societies with his extraordinary photographic gift. He takes concrete action to improve the lives of the impoverished and the abused. This is his life mission.

GMB Akash just recently opened the First Light Institute of Photography near Dhaka, a nonprofit photography school for young talented aspiring photographers and includes a support center for street children and a fundraising center to increase the length of education for girls which is currently only to the 9th grade.

GMB Akash has now published a second photography book called “Survivors” after his “FirstLight” photography book. The proceeds go to help Bangladeshi child laborers and their families start a small business to support themselves. It is called “Survivors” and he searched for the people in the photographs that he took after publication so that they could be the first ones to be assisted.

GMB Akash has been invited to the upcoming LuganoPhotoDays, an annual festival from October 12-20, 2013. He will be exhibiting his SURVIVORS photographs until October 25 and will be giving a lecture during the event on October 15, 2013.
