New York’s 2014 Persian Day Parade Celebrates Iranian Culture and Pride

Article, Photos and Video – Len Rapoport

Many cultures celebrate the change in the seasons but none do it quite as grand as the Persian Day Parade.  Started 11 years ago by a group of Iranian philanthropists the parade celebrates the Persian New Year also known as Nowruz, which marks the first day of spring.  Two years ago the parade organizers changed the date of this celebration which was usually held in March, but due to the poor and unpredictable weather they agreed to move it to mid-April.

This marked the 11th years of this parade and took place on Madison Avenue from 38th Street to 24th Street and began at noon.  It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining brightly and the colorful floats and participants dressed in native Persian clothing made this parade one to remember.

I have covered a number of parades recently and frankly, I enjoyed this one more than many others. It was the people, their pride in their culture and their spirit that I saw in this parade more than some of the others. As you can see in the photos, this was a joyous occasion for everyone from the Iranian participants to the thousands of spectators.

You will note that the parade participants were not only those of Iranian decent, but rather people from the many cultures and nations that made up the ancient Persian Empire.

In 1935 Rez? Sh?h requested that the international community refer to the country as Iran. Opposition to the name change led to the reversal of the decision, and in 1959 both names were to be used interchangeably.Today both “Persia” and “Iran” are used interchangeably in cultural contexts; however, “Iran” is the name used officially in political contexts…Wikipedia
